Short post: Is Finance for You

I get asked from time to time what does it mean to work in finance. Below are some thoughts.

The Good Stuff

  • Plenty of Options: You aren't stuck in one lane. You can do anything from personal financial planning to high-level corporate analysis or risk management.

  • Solid Skillset: You’ll learn how to handle data and make decisions under pressure. Those skills are valuable in almost any industry if you ever decide to leave.

  • Helping Out: It’s satisfying to help a family plan for retirement or help a business get the funding it needs to hire more people.

The Reality Check

  • The Hours: In some corners of the industry (like investment banking), you will live at the office. 80-hour weeks are a real thing.

  • Burnout: It’s high-stress and fast-paced. If you don't set boundaries, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

  • The Grunt Work: Not every day is a big deal. Some roles involve a lot of repetitive spreadsheets and rigid rules.

  • The Reputation: Some people view the finance world as "the bad guys," which can be annoying when you’re just trying to do a good job.

Who actually likes this job?

You’ll do well if you’re good with numbers, pay attention to the small details, and don’t crumble under pressure. It’s for people who like solving puzzles and using data to make big calls.

In the end, finance is what you make of it. If you pick the right niche, it can be a great career, but you have to go in with your eyes open.
